You need a strong base for strong buildings and structures, and similarly, the answer to many of your musculoskeletal and health problems could be in your feet!

Often people have problems like flat feet that change the way they stand and walk. As your feet roll inwards it places increased strain on your ankles, knees, hips, and low back.  This in turn can produce pain and dysfunction in these areas.

As part of our comprehensive approach at Trucare Health Group, we scan our patients using the latest GaitScan technology to identify any foot problems that may be contributing to their condition. This scan is completely free of charge.

Bhargav, our principle physiotherapist, is an expert in gait analysis and can quickly assess your gait and provide treatment, exercises or tips to quickly normalise how you walk to improve your pain, movement and lifestyle.

  • With injury or illness, your gait pattern can be very different from normal.

    • You may dip down at the hip during the stance phase, leading to hip bursitis or back pain.

    • You may find clearing the ground difficult in the swing phase. This may lead them to swing the leg round to swing through and cause hip pain.

    • You may be unable to pull up your toes (foot drop), which could lead to a trip or an inability to place your heel on the ground.

    • You may lean too far forward and potentially trip or stumble.

    • You push your walking aide (e.g. stick or frame) too far forward for an inefficient gait.

    • You walk with your weight too far back on your heels, which could cause you to fall backwards.

    • You could have poor balance, which some simple balance exercises could quickly improve to reduce your chance of a fall.

    • You may walk with one hand on furniture or a wall, which could lead to a fall!

  • It’s not always possible to tell if you have foot problems just from symptoms alone, but if you have any of the following there’s a good chance you may have a problem.

    • Are your feet sore on a regular basis?

    • Do you spend a lot of time standing?

    • Does standing, walking and running make your joints sore?

    • Do you have visible foot problems such as flat feet, bunions, callouses or high arches?

    • Do your parents have problems with their feet?

    • Are you worried about your childrens’ feet and the way they walk?

  • Assessment: Bhargav will ask you to walk across the electric pressure sensitive plate, which has thousands of tiny sensors that capture the distribution of pressure on your foot over time.

Analysis of Results: From your scan the computer displays 2D and 3D visual representations of the pressure under your foot as you walk. It also produces a series of reports that will be compared to an ‘ideal’ foot scan. He will discuss with you the results from your scan and reports, and evaluate if the pain you are experiencing is related to faulty foot function, and if so, how best to correct it.

Treatment Plan: Sometimes foot problems can be treated with exercises, mobilisation and other physical therapies. If that is appropriate, we’ll work out a program that is right for you.

If we identify an issue that needs specialised support, and that is where orthotics come in. Orthotics look like insoles for your shoes, but are biomechanical medical devices that are specifically made to correct your unique foot imbalance. In many ways they are like prescription glasses. They help your body adapt and reduce pain causing stresses and strains. The orthotics come in a range of styles and sizes from thicker sports orthotics to “standard” sizes through to lighter weight styles for women’s dress shoes.

  • Our GaitScan is completely free of charge.
