Why Massage During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy is a really great time to have regular massage therapy to help manage the aches and tension that can commonly occur, as well as to provide some dedicated time to connect with your pregnancy and receive some care yourself.

Is It Safe?

Pregnancy massage is safe to receive at any time during your pregnancy. There is a common misconception that it can’t be done during the first trimester, but there is no reliable evidence to say that massage causes miscarriage.

A Massage Tailored to You

Just like each pregnancy is unique, your massage treatment will be tailored to what you need that day and what helps you to be as comfortable as possible. This includes the pressure used, the position you lie in, the oil used, and the approach you want.

Whether you need the opportunity to relax as much as possible (maybe get some extra sleep!) or you want someone to just get into those sore points because you’re still working, exercising, or chasing toddlers—the treatment is about you.

Comfort and Positioning Options

At TruCare, there is a soft and supportive belly cushion that goes on top of the treatment table to enable a massage to be done in the face-down position. This can be so comfortable and a welcome relief for many women.

However, it doesn’t suit everyone—and that’s okay. A good massage can still be done in a side-lying position. From around the 22-week mark (or earlier if you decide that feels right for you), we avoid keeping a pregnant woman flat on her back. Instead, we adjust the table to recline so we can still treat in a face-up position.

How Often Should You Come?

A monthly pregnancy massage is a really great way to manage general aches and have a pause. For some women—especially towards the end of the pregnancy—they may like to come more frequently, such as fortnightly or weekly.

This can be a really difficult time to sleep comfortably, and massage can help relieve hip aches and be an alternative form of rest as you anticipate your newborn. You are welcome to continue coming up to your due date and beyond, for as long as you're comfortable.

Can Massage Help Induce Labour?

Unfortunately, massage doesn’t guarantee induction of labour—no matter how ready you may feel! But it can help support your comfort, reduce tension, and allow space to rest and reset.

If You’re Unsure

If there is any uncertainty about whether you can safely have a massage due to a high-risk pregnancy or other concerns, I highly recommend asking your antenatal care provider.
